Decades of political upheaval, civil unrests, devastating health and educational crises, severe environmental degradation, and natural disasters, most recently the devastating 7.0 earthquake of January 12, 2010, have resulted in a severe lack of infrastructure in the public sector; all contributing to an overwhelming and demoralizing 85% of the people living in abject poverty. With a need to provide for their families, educate their children, and access health care, many Haitians have migrated to the United States where they have encountered great financial, educational, language, and cultural disparities.
